Team Serve, our employee-led community service group, partnered with the Genki Ala Wai Project to support the organization’s goal of using bioremediation technology to make the Ala Wai Canal fishable and swimmable within seven years
Over 60 Servco team members and their families helped to make 876 Genki balls and toss 600 into the Ala Wai Canal! Genki balls are tennis ball-sized mud balls that contain a mixture of clay soil, rice bran, molasses, water, and Effective Microorganisms solution. When tossed into the canal, they reach the bottom and the fermentative bacteria digests and oxygenates the sludge.
About Genki Ala Wai Project
Since its creation, the Ala Wai Canal has been a depository for mud, organic debris, trash and various other pollutants. Sludge (rotten, organic material) forms and accumulates as a result of oxygen deficiency. The Genki Ala Wai Project is a non-profit project that aims to use bioremediation technology to make the Ala Wai Canal fishable and swimmable again by 2026. Bioremediation is the introduction of living organisms to enable an environmentally friendly means of removing pollutants from soil and water without negatively impacting or altering the natural ecosystem. Since officially beginning their operations in 2019, over 100,000 Genki Balls have been created and tossed into the Ala Wai.Â
