Team Serve put on their construction hats to help a small, but special group of friends in the Kailua community. Over the weekend, team members came together to rebuild Sunshine School’s playground, which needed replacement after 20 years of wear and tear.
Reconstruction began on Thursday, with the demolition of the current playground structure. A brand new chain-link fence was installed along with new gravel foundation, to comply with new federally-mandated safety guidelines for playground equipment and surfacing. The new playground sought to continue the school’s philosophy of creating a learning environment that empowers keiki to explore the world through play.
Team Serve members of all skill levels had no problem jumping in wherever needed–some duties included digging holes for the fencing while others involved cutting, sanding, and drilling playground pieces, or painting decorative murals and artwork.
The back playground reconstructed completely from scratch, features various climbers, a slide, cargo net, monkey bars, swings, and a crawl tunnel. The front playground received a makeover as well, with the addition of a new play house and a refreshed music gazebo.
Days of hard work was put into Sunshine School’s playground rebuild, which was completed on Sunday, thanks to the help of the school’s parents, teachers, members of the community, and Team Serve.
